Eight

“You look happy,” my co-worker Elise says, “You haven't stopped smiling all morning. I'm guessing you weren't bedridden with the flu these past few days.”

“Is it that obvious?”

Elise nods. “So what did you do? Weekend getaway? Spa vacation?”

“It's hard to explain,” I say. “Impossible really. Let's just say I took care of some personal business.”

Elise hands me a form. “Well I'm glad because it really looked liked you needed a picker-upper these past few weeks.”

“Thanks Elise.”

“Just happy to see you back at work.”

Several of my other co-workers also compliment me, saying I look like I'm 'glowing' and 'incredibly rejuvenated'. I do find I've got an extra bounce in my step.

Thanks to Jeremy's wicked bedroom manoeuvres last night.

But while I might look physically refreshed, mentally I am still hitting some roadblocks. Three, in particular, have been bothering me all day.

A) What do I do with Jeremy now? Are we still friends or something more? Is it wise to get involved with someone so soon after separating from your husband? I mean the news of my separation hasn't even been made public yet. Did I make a mistake because I was feeling vulnerable? Or did my actions really reflect what I've wanted all along?

B) When is Michael going to conduct that drug test? I need to strike while the iron's hot and take William down as soon as possible. Crush him, if possible.

C) What will Charlotte think when I tell her about Jeremy? Should I even tell her?

The answer to B) comes around lunchtime. Michael calls to tell me that he's just conducted the test. “I should get the results back within forty-eight hours. Fingers crossed,” he says. I thank him about a million times. At least that's a bit of good news.

After work, I decide to swing by Charlotte's place. She did say it was an open invitation.

Charlotte lives in a cramped studio apartment on the other side of town. It's an older building, built in the 1930s. The rent's affordable and she seems to like her landlady a lot so I guess that's good. She's been there for over four years now.

“Charlie, it's me. Can I come up?” I say into the intercom.

“Hey Rach, I wasn't expecting you. But sure, come on up.”

The buzzer sounds moments later and I pull open the glass door.

Charlotte lives on the third floor so I don't bother with the elevator. I take the stairs two at a time. In minutes I'm outside her door.

“Hey, come in Rach, I was just making dinner. Hope you're hungry.”

“Starving,” I reply. I unbutton my blazer and toss it on the couch along with my purse. “Smells good in here.”

I study the apartment. It's spotless; not a hair out of place. This is unusual for my baby sister. And cooking? Charlotte lives for takeout.

“What's going on here?” I ask. “Am I interrupting something? I am, aren't I? Do you have a boy hiding in the bathroom?” I grin at Charlotte but she doesn't grin back.

Charlotte clears her throat. “Well, my boyfriend's coming over in half an hour.
